About

Naomi Cashman

I am a native Kansan having grown up on a farm an hour north of Topeka. I have lived in Topeka since 1968, where my husband and I raised our two daughters.

I have always had a creative urge throughout my life, but am not formally trained as an artist. I came to be a watercolor artist later in life after having spent nearly 20 years sculpting waterfowl from wood, giving them finely textured details and painting with oils for a natural life-like appearance. My sculptures won regional and national awards in competitions. The Dyche Natural History Museum at the University of Kansas featured an exhibit of my sculptures in 1996.

I needed to give up the physical aspect of sculpting and turned to watercolor in 2008. Painting with watercolor became a whole new experience in creativity. Techniques are very different from oil pigments; wet on wet or wet on dry and transparency of the pigments. The experience became fascinating and challenging.  I have always enjoyed the beauty of the natural world where I find most of my inspiration; landscapes, its changing seasons, flora and fana. I paint what I see in a realistic style.  My palette is dictated by season and mood.  Detail has followed my work throughout sculpting and painting.

I have exhibited my work in local and regional galleries. I have been juried into Visions of the Flint Hills, Kansas Watercolor National Society exhibits, Symphony of the Flint Hills exhibit, Tim Murphy Gallery, and the Eight Annual National Parks traveling exhibit. In 2015 my work was chosen for the program cover of the annual Sunflower Music Festival. I am a member of the Lawrence Art Guild and the Topeka Art Guild. I have received several awards in juried shows at the Topeka Art Guild and received People’s Choice award at SouthWind Fine Art Gallery.
